Noise Meetup Workshops 2024

Noise Meetup is a regular meeting place for the noise community in Linz - with workshops, sound performances and jams. The aim of the Noise Meetup is to get to know, present and exchange ideas among noise enthusiasts with varying degrees of prior knowledge.

Workshops, jams, sound performances: The workshops are about sound production and artistic strategies. The jams are about experimenting, practising and presenting. Overall, the focus is on direct and joint construction, creation, knowledge exchange, reflection, feedback and presentation. There will also be live sound performances and artist talks by sound artists.

The Noise Meetups will also take place at two locations in Linz in 2024: The workshops will take place in the STWST, the performances in the spaceship (More info about the performances there).

NOISE COLLIDER WORKSHOP

In this workshop, guided by Mascha Illich and Luis Tamagnini, you will learn to algorithmically control modular / DIY synthesizers with SUPER COLLIDER. Bring your PC and modular / DIY synthesizers to the workshop!

Workshop details: Modular Livecoding.
Algorithmic control of modular synthesizers w/ Supercollider.
The workshop proposes to explore the encounter between two universes as vast as they are usually isolated from each other. Sound design with modular analog systems dates back to the 60's and the experimental processes that motivated the origin of the synthesizer industry. At the same time, the development of computers and algorithmic thinking itself gave rise to a whole series of languages and techniques that we know today as part of what we call “computer music”. These ecosystems, with a priori antagonistic principles, can be integrated into an hybrid, homogeneous and effective system. In this course, we will learn to implement algorithms in Supercollider, a very powerful and open source music computing language. We will then use the generated signals to control and extend the functionality of a modular synthesizer to build a powerful hybrid digital / analog performance instrument.

Workshop topics:

LUIS TAMAGNINI. Computer audiovisual composer. Initiated in the late 90's in the composition of electronic and concrete music. His work is deeply intertwined with algorithmic processes and concepts. In the mid-2000's, he began to investigate programming languages and apply algorithmic techniques to computer music and computer graphics. His current work is attached to a number of -not only- computacional concepts such as generativity, noise, machines, fractals and algebraical processes; as well as others meta-structural concepts like modularity and hybridization in complex systems (digital-analog, man-machines, etc) and networks. He is also interested in live-coding and improvisation. His works include musical compositions, electronic audiovisuals performances, video art and digital draws, among others. He is professor and researcher at Rosario National University - UNR. https://www.unexcoder.com.ar/

LIVE CODING with Tidal Cycles

In the workshop, Sule and Moritz will go through the installation of the required software packages and the setup of the live coding environment Tidal, Atom + SuperCollider together with the participants. In the further course of the workshop, participants will learn how to create patterns and how to transform them.
Tidal Cycles is a programming language for creating musical structures in real time that is connected to the global Algorave scene, which uses code as a musical interface. Tidal Cycles enables the playful use of algorithms, through its simplified language, to create electronic music in real time. Sule Suarez will talk about her creative process with Tidal Cycles. She will give a general context about the software and how it works as well as its potential for creation.

No previous programming knowledge is required for the workshop!
